James L. Rebeta, PhD is Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychology in Psychiatry at Weill Medical College of Cornell University in New York City. For many years and until recently, he was Co-Director of the Neuropsychological Assessment Service at New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Hospital/Westchester Division in White Plains, N.Y. He is primary author on over a dozen research studies on the assessment of brain functioning in individuals at biosocial risk (e.g., members of alcoholic families, cancer, children with disruptive mood dysregulation disorders, ADHD and other learning disorders). Throughout his long career he has provided full neuropsychological testing of children, adolescents, and young adults, primarily within the hospital setting where adopted patients are disproportionately represented, but also on a private basis. For adopted patients Dr. Rebeta uses an adoption-specific testing and evaluation protocol that includes the use of interview, as much as is known about the early (pre-placement) history, and projective testing. In some cases involving diagnostic complexities, he recommends adding specific kinds of genetic testing.
