Graham Kavanagh, PhD was originally educated in the U.K. at the University of Cambridge and at Oxford University. Trained in the classics and in theology, he has maintained a special interest in spiritual dimensions of human suffering, guilt, and hope. He came to Topeka, KS to study, and then to teach, psychology and psychiatry at the Menninger Clinic, then doctoral studies at Adelphi University/Derner and training in psychoanalysis at the William A. White Institute in New York. For ten years he directed the Long Island Institute of Psychoanalysis. Since the 1980’s Dr. Kavanagh has specialized in the treatment of college and graduate students, primarily affiliated with Columbia University, but has also provided mandatory assessments for administrations of Dartmouth College, Univ. of Rochester, Parsons School of Design, and the Juilliard School. It was in the course of treating university students that he developed a special interest in treating adopted young adults.
Related problems of special interest are the concerns of performing artists, alcohol/substance abuse; eating disorders; trauma related problems including identity disorders and survival struggles that mimic borderline and schizoid psychopathology. Dr. Kavanagh is fluent in Chinese and, since 2002, has been a visiting lecturer in psychology and psychoanalysis at the Beijing Institute of Technology and Peking University. He has a special interest in working with adopted people born in China and Korea, and with their families.
